Three small black fuzzy creatures behind the ear
Neck · Black and grey · Photo
Three small, round, black creatures with white eyes sit in a loose cluster on the skin behind the ear. The solid black ink has soft, fuzzy edges and minimal shading, with small highlights in the eyes. The purple plug earring and dark hair frame the tattoos against pale skin in a close, slightly angled composition.

The lamp at Scarrow Head had been smoking since the spring gales, and every morning the glass wore a fine black bloom that took me an hour to wipe away. I blamed the paraffin, then the wick, then the brass fitter from Wick who swore the burner was sound. It was my aunt's old tabby who found the trouble, sitting up on the coal bunker with her tail wrapped round three small black shapes that she clearly did not own.

They were round as conkers and soft at the edges, like something rubbed with a thumb, and they had white eyes that followed me across the room. When I lifted the coal scuttle they did not run. They simply rolled up the stairs ahead of me, one bump at a time, and I followed them with the lamp, which is how I learned they liked the warm brass of the lantern room best. Every night they sat along the rail and breathed soot into the flame's throat, and every morning the glass was clearer than it had been in years.
I stopped trying to scrub them out. I left a scuttle of Lothian coal on the landing and a saucer of oily rag on the sill, and I talked to them the way you talk to a dog that is not yours. The Isla Mairi came in through the sound on a Tuesday in fog, her lamp gone dark, and I climbed up with my heart in my teeth, certain I would find nothing but black.
The light was burning white and steady. Three soot-coloured shapes sat on the rail beside it, and when the boat sounded her horn the smallest one turned its white eyes towards the sea and lifted one fuzzy edge, as if to say the water was in good hands tonight.
