Blue blossom flowers on the side of the neck

Botanical · Neck · Colour · Photo

The photograph shows the side of a neck behind an ear, with a small silver ear piercing visible. Two clusters of five-petalled blossoms in blue ink run down the neck, with single petals scattered around them. The shapes are solid and simply coloured in one blue tone, and the composition places the tattoo diagonally across the skin with hair in the upper left.

Old Abel Thorne kept the orchard above Wexcombe Farm, though nothing had fruited there since his wife died. In the hard January the ground froze to iron and the ewes came down from the top field with their breath smoking. Each morning he walked the rows with a bucket of salt for the gateposts and looked at the bare grey branches of the cherry trees, which she had planted the year they married.

On the third week of frost, his granddaughter Nell came up with the feed sledge and found him kneeling in the snow under the nearest tree. Blue petals lay on the crust around his knees, five-cornered and small as a child's fingernail, scattered in a loose trail down the slope toward the barn. She picked one up. It was cold and dry and had no smell. "Nothing here blooms in winter," she said. "No," said Abel. "They come from the cold side of the valley, where the old road goes over. Your gran used to say a blossom falls where it's needed."

They followed the trail together, Nell pulling the sledge and Abel stopping every few yards to bend for another petal. It led them past the fold and the frozen trough and stopped at the gate of the lower field, where the lambing pen stood empty. Inside, a single ewe lay in the straw beside a lamb already dry and steaming. Pressed flat into the hay beside them were three more petals, set close together like a seal.

Nell laughed, then didn't. Abel took off his cap and held it against his chest. Behind them the orchard stood bare, and the trail of blue went on pointing at the pen as if it had never once been lost.
