The rain had come down on Tollbridge market for nine days, and by the tenth the stallholders had stopped pretending it would clear. Mabel Ror sold pegs and mending thread under a tarpaulin that sagged like a wet horse. Her cousins Ada and Pell sold eggs two stalls along, and between the three of them they owned one good umbrella, which none of them would lend to the others.

Old Tobiah Vane came by on the tenth morning with a crate of tin crowns for the Mayor's Day parade. He was a thin man who smelled of solder, and he said that a crown pricked small onto the inside of the wrist would keep a promise true for as long as the skin held. He sold the three of them a pot of soot-black ink for a penny each, and they did not ask him what the penny was for. That afternoon they sat under the tarpaulin with their sleeves pushed up, pricking the crowns with a darning needle, and Ada swore the rain went quiet while they worked.

The promise was simple. Whoever held the umbrella first would give it up when the others asked, and no one would sell an egg without splitting the price. Nobody remembers who broke it first. When the rain finally stopped, the crowns had faded to grey on all three wrists, but the cousins still stood close enough to share the last dry patch of cobbles. They stacked their hands on the empty egg crate, one over another, and let the umbrella lie folded in the gutter where the water ran.
