The cook of the Marigold kept a tin lamp in the galley, and on still nights he would cup it in his hands and flash three short pulses out over the water. His grandmother had taught him that three short was the letter S, and that S was the only letter a man needed when the sea had made him mute.

The ship lay becalmed for nine days south of the Azores, the sails hanging like wet washing and the casks going green in the heat. The captain, Mr Harrowgate, called the lamp a waste of whale oil and nailed the shutter closed. So the cook waited until the watch changed and the mate was snoring, then he pried the nails loose with a bread knife and flashed his three pulses anyway.

On the tenth night an answer came back from the dark, three short, then three short again. By dawn a dinghy was alongside with a boy in it, sunburnt to the colour of brick, who said his name was Peder Vance and that he had been pushed off a fishing smack three days before for stealing bread. He had been hoping, he said, that someone would notice a light.

The captain docked the cook a month's pay for the nails. The lamp went back on its hook, and the oil tin was still half full when they reached Bristol.
