Single line arrow on a wrist
Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A close photograph of a thin, single-line arrow tattooed horizontally across the inner wrist, with the arrowhead pointing left and the fletching on the right. The line is even and delicate, in dark ink that reads as blue-black. The skin fills most of the frame against a soft, blurred background.

Nobody in Wrenmouth could find the old cut under the streets after the fog came off the river, so the lamplighters sent for Nell Harrow, who could hear water through stone. She came down Chandler's Steps at half eleven with a length of ash across her back and a strip of tin in her pocket, and she did not bring a lamp.

"Follow the head," she told the watch at the sluice gate, "not the feathers. The feathers only show you where the river has been." She pinned the tin to the iron rail, its thin dark line pointing west toward the cut. The men took it for a joke until the water on the steps began to draw back from the wall, slow as a tide that had forgotten its own time.
Her grandmother had taught her the trick on the Tanners' Reach in the year the bargemen drowned. You draw the line from the place you want to reach back to the place you stand, and the water remembers the shape. Nell had never quite believed it until Tobias Quill, who ran messages for the chandlers, climbed down the wet ladder with a coil of rope and came up an hour later carrying a brass bell that had been lost since the flood.
At dawn the bell rang beneath the chandlers' yard. Nell walked home over Low Bridge without looking back, because she knew the arrow was still pointing the way she had come. At noon the tin was on the rail, its point turned toward the cut, and nobody in Wrenmouth had the heart to take it down.
