Constellation tattoo on a middle finger

Fine line · Hand · Black and grey · Photo

A hand with fingers spread on a light grey fabric shows a small constellation of black dots joined by hairline connecting lines on the middle finger. The dots vary slightly in size and the linework is delicate and even. The ink is solid black with no colour, and the tattoo sits centrally in the frame with the rest of the hand softly blurred around it.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Halvard kept the chart flat with his thumbs and told me to prick the stars in before the watch changed. Seven dots, no more, pressed through the paper with the point of the dividers. The Marguerite was a tramp steamer out of Hull, ten weeks up from the Plate, and the ship's cat had just walked across the sextant box. I was nineteen and thought he was having me on. Every old hand does that to the new boy, so I pricked the holes carefully and waited for the punchline.

It never came. Halvard showed me how to hold the dividers steady so the holes sat true, then ran a pencil line between them so the shape made sense. 'That one points you at the pole when the sky's clear,' he said, tapping the paper with a yellow nail. 'Find it, lad, and you can't properly get lost, even when the compass has been drinking and the log's full of lies.' He said it like the instruments were crew, and I suppose on a ship they were.

We reached Hull in March with the chart rolled and the pinholes gone soft with salt. Halvard went ashore to a cottage in Hessle and never signed on again. The chart went into my kitbag, then into the drawer under my bunk, and it stayed there for thirty years through two marriages and a flood in the cellar.

On the last clear night before I came off the water for good, I stood on the deck of a ferry and found the seven stars without any help at all, and for once the sky agreed with the paper.
