Sun and crescent moon on two wrists

Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

Two wrists are crossed, each showing a small tattoo of a sun and a crescent moon drawn in thin black linework. The two designs mirror each other, with the sun and moon swapped in position on each wrist. The ink is solid black with no shading or colour, set against pale skin and a blurred background of a window and floor.

The generator coughed twice and died, and somewhere over the waltzers a child started crying the way children do when the music stops. Nell was already up the ladder of the big wheel with a torch in her teeth, so I took the wrench from the trailer and went to find the fuse box myself. That was the arrangement. Nell ran the days, when the sun was on the candyfloss and the lads wanted their faces painted. I ran the nights, when the bulbs came on and the dark did the rest.

We had done it the summer we were fifteen, sat on the back step of the caravan with a sewing needle and a bottle of Indian ink Pete swore was for his canvases. Nell drew the sun on my wrist because she said I was always cold. I drew the moon on hers because she never slept. Mum found out and went quiet for a week, then asked which of us had the steadier hand, and we both pointed at each other.

By the time the fuse held, the wheel was turning slow above the cloth, and I could make out her silhouette at the top doing her little wave. I climbed to meet her at the hub, and we held our wrists together the way we did at the end of every shift, sun against moon, moon against sun, so the lamps looked like one bright thing for a second.

Pete said we'd be in Carlisle by morning. Nell said we'd follow the lights. I never asked her which of us was the sun. We never had to decide.
