Small infinity symbol on a wrist

Fine line · Hand · Black and grey · Photo

A small black infinity symbol sits on the inner wrist of a light-skinned arm, with the hand open and fingers slightly curled. The linework is thin and even, with solid black ink and no shading. The plain grey backdrop and grey top keep the focus on the small tattoo.

The chalk board above the grill carried a column of numbers that never seemed to end, and Pauline, the second cook, rubbed it clean every night at two bells. 'Thirty-one hundred breakfasts since Easter,' she said, 'and you still can't count them without swearing.' I told her a man could count to a thousand if he had the patience. She laughed and handed me the chalk.

The trouble started on the Holyhead run in February, when the bursar wanted the tallies squared against the stores manifest and I had to put a sideways eight beside each total. Pauline said it meant the stock never ran out, which was rubbish, because we ran out of bacon every Tuesday. Still, I liked the shape. You could trace it with a finger without lifting the hand, the two loops passing through the same small crossing in the middle like a knot that had agreed to stay tied.

On the last crossing before the yard took her in for refit, the sea got up past Anglesey and the tins slid off the rack. I found the manifest folded under a pan lid, the figures smudged to grey, and I drew the eight over the top of the smudge without thinking. Pauline read it upside down over my shoulder. 'Well,' she said, 'that one's not going anywhere.'

The ship docked at six. I still have the slate from that galley, and the eight is there under three years of breakfasts, rubbed faint but never quite gone.
