Three small red hearts on the wrist
Fine line · Forearm · Colour · Photo
A woman is photographed from behind with her hand raised and her fingers holding a strand of dark hair. Three small red hearts sit in a row on the inner wrist, drawn in simple solid fill with clean edges. The background is softly blurred green foliage, and she wears a white dress with a sheer, polka dot sleeve.

I have the ink pot out on the windowsill as you asked. Mr Trewin at the chandlery sold me a bottle of the red he uses for marking buoys. It smells of lamp oil, but he swears it holds on skin when the salt gets at it. I tried it on the back of my own hand last night with a darning needle and a steady lamp. Three hearts, no bigger than lentils, the way you drew them in the margin of your last letter when you were too cross to write properly.
You will say I am soft. Perhaps I am. But I keep thinking of the three of us on the slip in August, you counting gulls and me losing count, and how none of us ever said what we would do if one boat didn't come home. Three hearts, one for each of us who stayed on this side of the bar. I have decided that is a sensible way to keep a promise, if you cannot manage a speech.
Come home on the spring tide and bring the good needle. The kettle will still be going, and I will still be pretending I didn't wait at the window for you. Yours, with ink on my cuff, Maud
