Three small stars on the side of the body
Fine line · Ribs · Black and grey · Photo
Three small eight-pointed stars sit in a loose triangle on smooth skin at the side of the body. The outlines are thin, with a little shading in the star centres. The black ink contrasts clearly with the skin, and a purple waistband and maroon top frame the upper edge of the shot.

The oven at Hallam's was lit every night before the cockerel, and nobody in Cold Marrow Lane was allowed to draw the first loaf until three stars showed over the chimney stack. Old Tobiah had made the rule when his hands still worked well enough to score the dough, and he kept it after they didn't, sitting on an upturned crate by the back door with his flask of tea going cold between his knees.

That November the sky stayed shut for nine days. Wet cloud sat on the roofs like a lid. The apprentice, Wren Caddick, who was fourteen and had opinions, stood at the yard gate each morning with flour to her elbows and said the stars had gone to Penzance. Tobiah told her to bake by the smell. The bread rose, but it rose wrong, pale in the crust, and the shop bell went unanswered while customers stamped their feet in the cold outside.
On the tenth morning she could not stand it. She took the peel, pulled the loaves early and carried them out into the lane in steaming rows. Tobiah said nothing. He only lifted his flask toward the roof. A break had opened over the stack, and through it, small and sharp as pinpricks in black card, three stars hung in their loose triangle, exactly where his father had always said they would be.
Wren stood with the tray against her chest and counted them twice. Then she went back inside, took the thinnest knife from the rack, and at the foot of every loaf she cut a little star, and let the cold air in to see it.
