Two star sparkles on the upper back
Geometric · Back · Black and grey · Photo
Two solid black, eight-pointed star shapes sit on bare skin, one larger and higher on the right and one smaller and lower on the left. Each star has a hollow centre ring with tapering points radiating outwards, with the longer points extending downwards. The image is a warm-toned close-up with a plain skin background and no other colour.

Nobody at the reunion remembered that Mrs Pardoe made us draw compass roses in Year Nine, so when Tash pulled a biro from her handbag and started sketching on a beer mat, I had to laugh. Eight points, she said, always eight, because a sailor needs the in-betweens as much as the north. I told her the in-betweens were the only bit I'd ever got right.

We had been the two girls at the back of the geography room, cutting stars from chocolate wrappers and gluing them inside our planners. The bigger star was the chapel roof at the top of Hollin Lane, where we climbed the wall every Friday to watch the last train go over the viaduct. The smaller one was the spot by the reservoir where we buried a biscuit tin with a note inside saying we'd meet there in twenty years.
Tash had got the date wrong by a fortnight, or maybe she hadn't. We walked up Hollin Lane in our good shoes, the gravel loud under us, and the reservoir was a black mirror with a few lights on the far bank. She crouched and dug with a plastic spoon borrowed from the buffet. The tin came up rusted at one corner, the foil stars inside still bright enough to catch the torch.
She read the note aloud, her voice cracking on the last line, and then she laughed and so did I. We sat on the wet grass until the sky went grey over the moors. The long points on a compass rose always point to where you came from, she said. I think she meant the school. I think I meant us.
