Fine line black lettering reading CALM three times in a stacked column on a forearm.

Three stacked CALM lettering on a forearm

Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A close photograph of a forearm bearing three thin, black outlined words spelling CALM, stacked one above another and set in a simple geometric sans serif. The linework is delicate and even, with no shading, and the ink sits crisply on pale skin. The blurred background shows stickers and printed paper, and the tattoo is centred in the frame.

The wind has got into the letterbox again, and Mrs Hollis wants you to know she has put the kettle on rather than let the rattle get to your nerves. She hands you a key on a brass fob shaped like a lighthouse and tells you the breakfast gong sounds at eight, not a minute before, because the sea does not wait and neither does the bacon.

Your room is at the top of the stairs, under the eaves, where the wallpaper has lifted at the corners. Someone has pinned three small cards to the back of the door. Each one says the same word in the same thin, careful letters, stacked one above the other the way a keeper might stack spare lamps. CALM. CALM. CALM. You assume it is a joke about the weather until you notice the dust has been wiped from the top card in a neat square, as if someone checks it every morning.

Your father kept rooms here for thirty summers, the solicitor's letter said, and left you the lease on a house you have never once seen from the inside. You sit on the bed with the sea grinding under the window and open the ledger he left in the drawer. Every page ends with the same line in his square hand: Keep the cards straight. Keep the guests calm.

On your last night the gale takes a slate off the roof and the whole house holds its breath. You stand in the corridor with your palm flat against your own door and find that the three words no longer look like an instruction. They look like a ladder. You climb it down one stair at a time to where Mrs Hollis is already waiting with two cups and the lamp turned low, and for once you do not reach for the key.
