Three stacked triangles on upper back

Fine line · Back · Black and grey · Photo

A close photograph of a person's upper back showing three outlined triangles stacked vertically, decreasing in size from top to bottom. The thin, single-weight linework is clean, and the top triangle has extra inner lines that create a layered effect, while the lower two have smaller inner triangles. The tattoo is in black ink on pale skin against a plain, softly lit background, with the composition centred on the spine.

The third cairn was still warm from the sun when Maren found her husband's tracks ending at the lip of the scree. She had counted the stones twice already. Nine for the top course, six for the middle, three for the small one at the base, the way her grandmother had taught her to build a marker on the high road above Vael. Each course sloped like a mountain of its own, and the old people said a traveller who could read them would never walk off the edge of the world.

Tobiah had gone up after the goats at the first snow and not come down. The men of the village said the drifts had buried him, and they said it kindly, which made it worse. Maren did not believe them. She took a flat grey stone from her apron and scratched the outline of the largest triangle into the dirt beside the cairn, then the middle one, then the smallest. Last of all she shaded a small triangle inside the top one, the way the snow lay on the peak at dawn.

Three nights later a goat bell rang below the ridge. Tobiah came over the crest with the herd behind him, thin as a rake, and the first thing he said was that he had followed the stacked stones down from the pass, one by one, until the path ran flat under his feet.

He never asked where the top course had come from. Maren had pulled those nine stones from the hearth wall of their own house, and she kept the flat grey one in her apron, and she counted twice every time she passed a cairn.
