Fine line triangle and figure tattoo on neck
Fine line · Neck · Black and grey · Photo
A fine black line tattoo shows a large outlined triangle containing smaller nested triangles, with a circle and vertical line rising from the apex like a stick figure. Small dots sit along the edges of the outer triangle and beside the figure. The linework is thin and even, and the design is centred on the upper back of the neck, with dark hair framing the top of the image.

Mrs Agathe Pell had carried her own kitchen chair into the school hall, a wooden thing with a split rush seat, and she set it down at the front as if the forty-odd of us were a tent crowd come to hear her. 'Sit down, the lot of you. I was there when the fell took the Marr girl, and nobody under seventy has told it right.'

Ida Marr was the schoolmaster's daughter, and she wanted the cairn on top of Scarrow Fell more than she wanted her tea. Every autumn the shepherds built their winter shelters the same way, three stones at the base, a smaller ring set inside, and a single round stone stood on the peak with a crooked ash stick pushed into it. Ida said the stick was a man waiting at the top to be counted. She left a trail of pebbles up the north side, three at every bend, so her brother could follow if the mist came down.
The mist came down on a Tuesday in October. Her brother found the pebbles and stopped counting at the third bend, because the dots had run out and the sheep had been at the rest. Agathe said the village turned out with lanterns and found nothing but the cairn, rebuilt that morning, with a new stick through the stone and three pebbles laid beside the base. Nobody had seen Ida come down. Nobody has seen her since.
Agathe stood up, pushed the chair back against the wall, and told the hall to look at the tattoo on the back of the girl two rows from the front. 'Count the dots,' she said. 'If there are three, you're home. If there aren't, you'd better go and look for her.'
