Three sunflowers on a upper back
Neo-trad · Back · Colour · Photo
The tattoo shows three sunflowers clustered together, with large brown seed heads surrounded by layered yellow and orange petals. Bold black outlines and soft shading give the petals depth, and thin dark stems link the flowers. Warm yellow and orange ink dominates the composition, which sits centrally across the upper back on a light-skinned subject wearing a grey bra.

Dear Win, the sunflowers came up on the allotment behind the chapel the week after you left, all three at once, as if they had agreed it between themselves. Dad says they are too tall for the fence and he is right. They lean over the path and dust the postman's cap every morning, and Mr Pryce has stopped complaining about them.

Mrs Ackroyd at the post office asked after you, and I told her you were learning shorthand in Bristol and writing to me on Sundays, which is nearly true. I have pressed the first seed head between the pages of the Bible, where you used to hide Tom's letters from Dad. It has gone the colour of toffee, and the seeds rattle when you tip it.
The middle one is the stubborn one. Its stem bends like a question mark and it keeps turning its face to the back kitchen window, the way you used to hang about at the sink waiting for me to finish the drying. I have stopped trying to straighten it. Dad cuts them all down in October whatever I say, so I have been saving seed in a biscuit tin with a robin on the lid, to put in the ground by the wash house next spring.
Come home at Christmas if the trains run. I will have the seed ready and you can help me plant it, and we can see which one turns round to face you first. Your loving sister, Edie.
