Three tulips on a calf

Realism · Calf · Colour · Photo

Three tulips, two upright and one angled, sit on green stems with long leaves that wrap around the base. The petals are shaded with smooth gradients from red to orange and yellow, and the flower centres show fine detail. The design fills the centre of the frame against bare skin on the lower leg.

Dear Nell,

The fields were out by the Saturday, the whole run from Holbeach to the sea gone red and gold in rows so straight you could sight down them like a rifle. Dad walked the headland with his cap in his hand and didn't say much, which is how I knew he was pleased. Forty thousand bulbs, he reckoned, and not one of them had the decency to rot in the wet.

Ruth wants her bouquet to be three stems only, which I thought was daft until I showed her the photos of the Dutch ones and saw her face. She said three for the past, the present and whatever's coming. I told her that was a lot of weight for a flower that lasts four days in a vase. She laughed and said that was the point of tulips, they're honest about not lasting.

So on Thursday I cut the three she picked, the orange ones with the yellow flush at the throat, and bound the stems in green raffia the way Mum used to for the church. The leaves wrap round the base like a pair of hands. I wanted you to see them before the van comes. They'll be on the dresser by the time you read this, and I've put the kettle on for when you're back.

Love, Jo
