Three wand tattoos on fingers
Fine line · Hand · Black and grey · Photo
Three slim black wand designs sit along the fingers of one hand, each drawn as a straight shaft with small decorative bands and a tapered tip. The lines are thin and even, with light shading on the shafts and no colour ink. The hand is shown against a blurred wooden surface, with the wands spread across the middle and ring fingers and the index finger in the foreground.

Brother Osric hands you the rods on the first morning of Lent, three of them wrapped in a strip of linen as if they were relics. Unwrap them slowly, he says, because the hazel is older than the scriptorium roof. Each one is the length of your hand from knuckle to tip, banded twice with pewter so the fingers know where to grip, and tapered to a point no thicker than a barley grain.

You are sixteen and sure you are being tested for pride. The other novices have been given quills and pumice. You have been given three sticks and the quiet suspicion that Osric is laughing at you behind his beard. He tells you the rods rule lines that will not wander, even when a candle guttering in the draught makes the page seem to tilt. He tells you the ink must be thin and the hand must be still.
For a month you rule nothing but failure. Lines bow. Ink pools in the bands and drips onto the vellum. Then one night, alone, with frost whitening the window and the bell for matins not yet rung, you lay the rod along the margin, breathe out, and draw. The line runs true from the top of the leaf to the bottom, dark and unbroken, and it does not care at all whether you believed in it.
Osric finds it in the morning and says nothing. He only turns the page to the light and taps the line once with a finger stained blue from the woad.
