At the fork below Halden Ridge, the road sign had been shot through so often that its arrow pointed at nothing but the sky. Mara Odell stopped her mule there anyway. Her grandmother had told her that the road never really ended, only paused, and a pause was a place a person could rest without lying down.

Everyone in the valley knew the old riddle. The road east was long and the water was short, and a traveller who took the wrong branch would walk in circles until the crows had her name. Mara had carried a tin of ink and a bone needle since she was twelve. Each time she passed the post she marked it with a small pale dot beside the stroke, as her grandmother had taught her. A semicolon, the old woman said, was a sentence that refused to die.

The drought came in the third summer. The wells turned brown, and the herders left in ones and twos, each one pausing at the fork to squint at the broken arrow and then at Mara's dots. She stayed. She dug below the dry riverbed where her grandmother had shown her, and at fourteen feet the earth went cool and dark under her hands.

When the first family came back up the road with their goats, they found a new post at the fork, painted white, with a black arrow pointing east and a mark between its shaft and its head like a breath held. Nobody asked her what it meant. They drank from the cistern, filled their skins, and walked on.
