Sit down by the stove, the lot of you, and mind the coal scuttle, because this is the winter the cat came aboard the Mary Ellen and nobody thought to ask her opinion. She came out of the fog at Brentford lock with her feet black from the towpath and her face the colour of weak tea, and she looked at old Tom Pargeter as if he were the one who'd turned up uninvited. Tom had buried a wife and a spaniel, so he knew what it was to be left alone, and he took her in without fuss.

She was a Siamese, the lock-keeper's daughter told him, and they came from somewhere hot where the rivers ran warm. She wouldn't sleep below in the bunk. Every evening she sat on the cabin roof facing upstream, and those blue eyes caught the lamp at the lock gate like two bits of clear sky. Tom called her the Admiral to make her look daft, and the name stuck the whole length of the Grand Union.

In February the ice came thick on the cut, and a boy from the towpath went through it chasing a ball, or a duck, depending on who tells it. Tom heard nothing. The Admiral did. She was up on the roof yowling before the boy's shout had carried past the bridge, and by the time Tom had the boathook off its hooks she was already sitting on the ice edge, tail curled, watching the black water where the boy had gone under.

They pulled him out blue and coughing, and he lived to be a grown man with a barge of his own. Tom never did learn what the cat had seen in that water. So when you're walking the towpath and you spot a pair of blue lights up on a barge roof, don't you go thinking it's only the lamp.
