Tiny gemstone tattoos across fingers

Fine line · Hand · Mixed · Photo

Two hands cover the face of a woman with long dark hair, and each finger carries a small tattoo of a gemstone or faceted crystal. Most shapes use thin black outlines, while about half are filled with colour in green, red, orange, yellow, teal, blue, purple and pink. The plain light background keeps the focus on the fingers.

Brother Anselm had counted the stones twice before the bell for Vespers, and twice he had come up one short. Eleven pieces lay on the cloth of the scriptorium table: garnet, sard, a chip of yellow beryl, a teal fragment the colour of pond water under ice. The abbot wanted them set into the new reliquary by Michaelmas, and the reliquary wanted twelve.

He had been given the work because his hands were steady and because nobody else in the house would touch the lapidary's files. Years of copying psalters had made him patient with small things. He turned each stone under the lamp, looking for the facet that would take the light, and drew it on vellum with a fine nib: a thin black outline, the faces meeting at their angles, so the abbot could see where each one would sit.

On the third evening he found the twelfth in his own sleeve, a violet crystal worn smooth as a river pebble, the one he had carried from the cellar to show the novices. He had forgotten it there. Outside, the snow had stopped and the cloister lay blue under a clean moon.

He set it in the last socket, then sat with the reliquary open in his lap. The abbot would ask about the drawings. Anselm had kept them all, one tiny polyhedron per stone, and he thought he might bind them into a book instead, a small thing a man could carry in a pocket and open anywhere he liked to find the light.
