Fine line black tattoo on a thigh with small planets, a sun, a star and the words VIVRE LIBRE in tiny capitals.

Tiny planets and words on the thigh

Fine line · Thigh · Black and grey · Photo

A small cluster of fine line motifs sits on the outer thigh: a ringed planet resembling Saturn, two round planets with surface markings, a sun with rays, a starburst and scattered dots. The words VIVRE LIBRE run in small spaced capitals beneath the motifs. The linework is thin and even in black ink, with no shading, set against pale skin and dark patterned socks.

Dear Nan,

The sea has been flat for four days, which Skipper says is worse than a gale, because a gale at least gives you something to blame. We are sitting off the Dogger with nothing in the net but dogfish and a boot somebody lost in March. With that much time on my hands I keep looking up. Last night the cloud cleared after the watch changed and I found Saturn low over the water, ringed like the brass hoop on Grandad's pipe. Tom says it's just a bright dot that doesn't blink, and maybe he's right, but I told him it had its rings on regardless.

We have a chart table in the wheelhouse with a lamp that swings on its hook, and the planets I can see are the ones I've been drawing in biro along the edge of the chart, little rings and suns and dots, the way you drew them on the back of my school atlas. Luc, the French lad from Boulogne, reads the words on the tin of boiled sweets his mother sent, VIVRE LIBRE, and says it means live free, and then laughs because nobody on a trawler is free of anything, least of all the tide.

Skipper put a pencil mark in the corner of the chart this morning, a little sun with rays, and said it was for luck. Then he said it was for the girl in Grimsby he keeps not mentioning. I laughed properly for the first time since Tuesday. When we make harbour I'll bring you the star I saw over the Shetland light, the one that never moves, and you can tell me which of the dots is me.
