To Infinity and Beyond script on inner wrists
Fine line · Other · Black and grey · Photo
Two inner wrists are shown side by side, each with a single line of black script lettering. The left wrist reads To Infinity and the right reads and Beyond, both in thin, slanted linework with some variation in stroke weight. The tattoos are black ink only, set against the skin with a dark strap or cord visible in the lower left of the frame.

Sit yourself nearer the range, because the damp in this house likes a stranger best, and I'll not tell it twice. Mrs Pellow had the front rooms at Gull Rock Lodge the summer the Ferris sisters came back from Hull with nothing in their pockets but a rail ticket and a row. Ada and Nell were twins, and they shared the attic under the sloping roof, and they argued through the wall every night until the sea argued them quiet.

There was a travelling inker working the front at Saltcombe that August, a Mr Dorrance with a tin of ink and a brass lamp that smelled of paraffin. The sisters had sixpence between them, which bought two words apiece and no more. So they had him write one phrase across the pair of them, split down the middle. To Infinity went on Ada's wrist and and Beyond on Nell's, and Dorrance swore it was the cheapest bit of poetry he had ever sold. 'You'll have to stand together to read it,' he said, and they laughed at him, because they were sisters and had never once stood together without a quarrel.
Nell married a carter from Pickering the following spring and went north with her trunk and her temper. Ada stayed on at the Lodge, sweeping ash off the step and not speaking of her. Every Sunday for thirty years she walked down to the harbour wall and held her wrist out over the water, as if she were checking the tide. Nobody in the town thought to ask what she was waiting for, and I didn't think to ask until the winter Nell came back in a black coat, thinner and greyer, and sat down beside her on that same wall.
They did not say much. They sat with their arms stretched out, two inches apart, and neither one leaned in. Then the wind dropped and the tide turned under the breakwater, and Ada said, quite clearly, 'Well, go on, then.' Nell laid her wrist against her sister's and the two halves met, and the old ink looked as if it had been one line all along. Ada laughed till she coughed. That's the whole of it, and the kettle's on.
