Dear Nell,

Forty-one days out from Callao and the Bosun has finally run out of patience with the galley radio. He has been playing the same cassette of eighties funk since Panama, and yesterday he wound it so tight the tape snapped. Mr Okafor, the only man aboard who can mend anything, spent the afternoon splicing it with a matchstick and a strip of Sellotape. When it played again he held it up to the lamp like a surgeon and said, "Too legit to quit," and the whole mess deck laughed, the first real laugh I've heard from the crew in weeks.

I keep thinking about that because the crossing has been hard. Eleven men in a steel box, the swell never letting up, and the chief engineer barely speaking since the bearing went on the port shaft. Okafor keeps a brass-cornered notebook where he logs the weather, the revolutions and, on bad nights, a single line he calls small mercies. Last Tuesday it said only: tape held.

I want you to know I'm not as sorry for myself as these letters must sound. I think I'll be fine. I've copied his line on the back of this envelope so that when you open it you'll know I'm still here, still paying attention, and still going to bring you that tin of ginger biscuits you like.

Love, Tom
