The tooth fairy's round had run late, and by the time Hester reached the Fenwick orchard the windfalls were already soft in the grass. Wasps hung drunk over the rotting fruit. She carried the canvas bag on her hip, each tooth tagged with a name in pencil, and she had one left to deliver before the dawn bell from the church across the lane.

The child was a boy called Tom, eight years old, and he had left his tooth on the caravan step instead of under a pillow, because his gran had told him the fairies lived in the trees. Hester found it wrapped in a twist of pink ribbon, the bow still crisp at the top. Nobody had ever tied a bow on a tooth before. She sat on the low wall to think about it, swinging her boots.

Rules were rules. A tooth was currency, a coin for the ledger, and the ledger belonged to the Court under the hill. But a bow was not in any rule she had been taught. She untied it, turned it over in her fingers, then looped it around the lowest branch of the old Bramley, the one whose trunk split like a wishbone. In its place she left a single silver penny in the fork of the tree.

At first light Tom came out in his socks, found the penny, and ran shouting for his gran. By the time the Bramley dropped its first fruit the ribbon had faded to the colour of old rose, and Hester's ledger was one line shorter than it should have been.
