Red heeled shoes with bows on a forearm

Neo-trad · Forearm · Colour · Photo

A pair of red heeled shoes with bow details sits on the forearm, with the heel of the nearer shoe on the left and the bows angled towards the lower right. The design uses bold black outlines, glossy red and pink shading and white highlights to give the shoes a sparkly, shiny finish. The tattoo is centred on a plain skin area, with tiled flooring and part of a hand visible in the background.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Nell Ashby had wrapped the red shoes in tissue paper and buried them at the bottom of her trunk, where no steward would think to look, though the purser had already counted the cabin luggage twice. The ship was the Calydon, nineteen days out of Liverpool, and the sea smelt of coal smoke and wet rope. Her father had cut the soles for those shoes the winter before he went into the Mersey, and she had sewn the bows herself, so she knew every stitch.

On the fourth night a steward knocked and said a lady in the second saloon had paid good money for a pair of red heels and was sure they had been put in the wrong trunk. Nell said nothing about the shoes. She followed him down iron stairs, the soles of her plain boots loud on every rung, and found the lady at a table under a swaying lamp, her feet bare beneath the cloth.

The lady held out her hand for the shoes without looking up. She slipped one on, stood, and walked three careful steps across the carpet. Then she sat down again and said they pinched at the toe, that she had bought them only so she would have something to walk away in when the ship docked and nobody on the quay knew her name. Nell took the shoes back and carried them up to the deck in the dark.

At New York she went down the gangway in them, bows bright under the electric lamps, her heels ringing on the planks like a small bell. Behind her the trunk stood open on the quay, the tissue paper folded neatly inside, nothing else left in it.
