Penguin inside a blue heart on a lower leg
Calf · Colour · Photo
A small penguin sits inside an outlined heart, with flowing blue swirls and green and blue dots curving out from either side. The linework is clean and fairly bold, with the penguin shaded in soft grey and white against the blue. The tattoo is centred on pale skin against a dark background.

The penguin had been trailing the Mary Jean for three days when Ada finally tossed it a herring, and I swear the bird looked insulted by the size of it. It stood on the stern rail with its chest puffed out like a bishop at a christening, turning its head to watch the swell folding over itself in our wake. Ada said it was looking for a mate. Cook said it was looking for its supper and he'd happily oblige it with a stew.

We'd put out from Stanley with a hold full of cod and a skipper who hadn't slept since Thursday. The wind came round to the south-west on the Tuesday and stayed there, and the sea turned the colour of wet slate, then ink, then nothing at all. Somewhere in that grey the bird dived and surfaced, dived and surfaced, always a little nearer the hull than the water could account for. Ada took to leaving the galley door open for it, which the skipper pretended not to see.
On the fourth morning the fog lifted like a sheet off a bed, and there was a gap ahead of us between two black headlands, the water inside it blue as a gas flame. The bird went through it as if someone had drawn the way on a chart. We followed it in. Ada never told me what she made of that. She only tied a scrap of green ribbon round the rail where it had stood and said the sea would know whose it was.
