Bold black arrow-like tattoo on ankle
Ankle · Black and grey · Photo
The tattoo is a solid black design with a thick, rounded section on the left that tapers into a curved line and a pointed tip on the right. The ink is opaque with smooth edges and a few lighter patches where the skin shows through. The photograph is taken close up at a slight angle, with the foot filling most of the frame against a pale grey background.

The brothers at Saint Oswin's owned one boat, and it leaked, so each grey dawn it was Brother Ambrose who rowed it onto the lake with a line, a lead weight the size of a plum, and a hook bent from an old horseshoe nail. The fish had gone deep that year. The abbot told him to mend the nets instead, and Ambrose said nets were for men who expected company.

He fished anyway. Through the thin months he sat with his cold hands tucked in his sleeves and let the weight drop until he felt it touch the mud. Some mornings the line went slack, and some mornings it fought him. Once it came up with nothing but a boot sole, which he wrapped carefully and gave to the cobbler's boy.
Then came the morning the line would not come back. It ran taut and steady toward the drowned end of the lake, where the old chapel had gone under when the water rose. Ambrose leaned over the gunwale, hauling until his shoulders cracked, and something heavy shifted in the dark. The bell of the sunken chapel, still hung from its rope, swung up through the water and rang once, low and muffled, like a man clearing his throat.
The village heard it from the shore. They came down with lanterns and found the boat drifting, the abbot sitting in the bow with his face wet, and Ambrose at the oars, not looking at the water. The bell was never raised. It sits there still, they say, and when the lake is calm you can hear it ringing for anyone who has been fishing too long on their own.
