Circled geometric bars tattoo on a heel

Fine line · Ankle · Black and grey · Photo

A small tattoo of a thin black circle enclosing two outlined rectangles, one upright and one tilted, joined by a solid black horizontal bar. The linework is clean and even, with no shading, and the design is entirely black ink on pale skin. It sits centrally in the frame on the heel of a bare foot, with a plain wall and dark floor behind.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Sunday, 14 January. Snow to the sills of the signal box at Hollin Cross by four, and the telegraph has been dead since noon. Mr Eckersley came up the cutting with his lamp at half past and would not come in until I had shown him the interlocking frame was still true. He stood looking at the levers a long while, the way a man looks at a dog he does not trust.

The frame has nine levers, each with its own brass plate. Four drives the up home signal and seven throws the points that send the goods loop into the sidings. Between them runs the locking bar, a flat iron strip that drops across both tappets so that neither lever can move while the other stands reversed. Nobody has ever found a way round it that did not end in a derailment. Eckersley said as much, then said the bar was the only thing in Hollin he trusted.

At nine the snow stopped as suddenly as it had started, and in the stillness we heard a train labouring up from Scarth, its whistle hanging over the moor like a question. I pulled four, then reached for seven, and the bar held me. Its weight sat exactly against my wrist. I stood with my hand on the cold iron until the driver's lamp swung into the cutting, and I understood that the frame had been built so that a tired man could not be quicker than his own good sense.

I wrote it in the book at 21.14: Signal cleared, points locked, one passenger train, all well. Then I drew in the margin a small ring around the two levers and the bar that joined them, because I had no other way to say it.
