Torn skin revealing a shock absorber on a calf
Realism · Calf · Colour · Photo
A realistic tattoo on the lower leg shows a yellow and silver Öhlins shock absorber with a yellow coil spring, appearing through a split in the skin. The shading is smooth and detailed, with metallic highlights on the body of the shock, darker shadows around the spring and red tones suggesting torn flesh. Colour ink dominates, with the shock and spring in yellow and silver against a dark background, and the leg fills most of the frame.

The rally hatchback on the ramp had been rolling on tired springs for two seasons, and its owner, a retired postman who called everyone love, wanted it level for the Brecon stages before the rain set in.

They spent the afternoon with the body stripped to bare shell, scrubbing grease off their hands in a bucket of cold water that smelled of diesel. Owen wanted to measure the preload twice. Mags wanted to drive the car down the lane first, because she had learned in the valley that a number on paper meant nothing once the tarmac was wet and the sheep were in the road. They argued it out over two mugs of tea brewed on a camping stove, since the workshop kettle had died in January.
At dusk they fitted the last bolt and took the car out past the chapel gate. The first ridge came up under the front wheels, a hard lip of tarmac, and the body rose and settled without a sound, the way a held breath lets go. Mags said nothing. Owen watched the bonnet in the wing mirror, flat and steady, and understood that the car had forgotten the bump before the bump was finished.
