Tote bag printed with tattoo flash designs

Traditional · Colour · Flash

A cream tote bag with a repeating pattern of tattoo flash-style designs, including alien heads, flying saucers, a hand, flowers, a flame, a cigarette and banners with phrases such as 'I want to believe'. The designs use bold black outlines with soft grey shading and a palette of red, orange, blue and green. The motifs are spaced evenly across the bag face, with dots, stars and small planets filling the gaps.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The third call that night came from the reservoir road, and the man on the line was out of breath. Give me the constable, he said. I'll give you the constable, Agnes said, once you tell me what you've got in your hands, because nobody rings the exchange at two in the morning with nothing in their hands.

He had a saucer, or said he did, a flat grey thing sitting on the water with its lights off like a dropped pan lid. Agnes had heard that story from a dairyman in March and a girl from the chapel in June, and each time the saucer had turned out to be a barge or the moon caught in a puddle. She plugged him through anyway. Her father had taught her that a switchboard was a window onto the town, and a window only worked if you let people look out of it.

The constable arrived at half past two with his torch and his bad knee. Agnes stayed on the line, listening to the hum of the cable and the man breathing. Past the hedges a light came up off the water, orange at its edges, and it hung there turning slowly, and the constable said a word his mother would have scrubbed out of him with carbolic soap.

In the morning a notice was pinned beside the bus timetable outside the post office, a hand-drawn card with a saucer on it and I WANT TO BELIEVE in red capitals underneath. Nobody admitted to putting it there. Agnes read it twice on her way to the exchange, then sat down at the board, pulled in her first plug of the day, and listened for the reservoir line to ring.
