Totoro and No-Face on upper arm
Upper arm · Mixed · Photo
A tattoo sleeve on an upper arm shows a large blue Totoro with a watercolour wash of teal, blue and purple, plus a small cream creature beside it. Below, a black-robed No-Face character is drawn with soft grey shading, framed by red flowers and green leaves that run down the arm. The inked outlines are clean, and the colour is bold against the pale skin.

Nell had counted the buses twice before the grey figure stepped out from under the railway bridge, and by then the rain had soaked her coat to the elbows. The bus shelter on Hollin Lane smelled of wet cardboard and someone's vinegar chips. She had been waiting forty minutes for the 4.10, and it was not coming.

The figure did not walk so much as drift along the kerb, a long dark robe dragging its hem through the puddles without a splash. Its face was a pale oval with two black holes for eyes, and it held out a hand the colour of old candle wax, palm up, as if asking for change. Nell had nothing but a bus pass and a crumpled receipt. She gave it the receipt. The figure folded the paper slowly, tucked it into its sleeve, and then did something she would not have believed in daylight: it lifted one long hand towards the sky, and the rain stopped falling on that side of the road.
Above them, something large and sleepy shifted among the clouds, a shape the blue of a bruise going to gold at the edges, with ears like two folded leaves. A smaller grey creature sat on its belly and blinked down at her. Nell laughed, though it came out wet. The big shape yawned, a warm breath smelling of camphor and cut grass rolled over the shelter, and the bus finally swung round the corner with its headlights smeared to a glow.
When she looked back, the shelter was empty except for a single red flower pressed flat against the glass, its stem still green. She kept it in her coat pocket until the flat was warm, and she never told anyone where it came from.
