Totoro with umbrella and acorns on a finger
Hand · Mixed · Photo
A grey cartoon creature resembling Totoro stands beneath a red umbrella on the middle finger, with a pale belly and simple black outlines. Below it, a small cluster of acorns with green oak-style leaves sits on the same finger. The shading is soft and flat, with bold colour fills for the umbrella and leaves against the pale skin, and the image is framed tightly on the hand against a red background.

Dear Ysolde,

The rain came sideways over the terraces again this morning, so I took the big umbrella down to the old oak and found the grey one sitting in its roots, exactly where your mother said he would be. He had two acorns in his lap and was pretending they were not his. I told him the seed vault needed them for the spring planting, and he looked at me the way the drones look at us when we forget to charge them. Then he gave me one. Just one, which I suppose is how you bargain with something that has been alive since before the grid went dark.
Your mother never believed the stories about him, and I do not blame her. The valley people stopped telling them when the river moved east and the wind began carrying salt. But I have sat under that oak in every storm for forty years, and he has never once got wet while I did.
Last night the council voted to fell the oak for timber. I have been trying to write that calmly for a page and failing. What I want you to do, when you are sent to the vault next season, is walk down past the second wall, stand beneath the lowest branch, and hold the umbrella over the place where the roots break the stone. Leave the acorn there. He will know what it means.
Love, and keep your boots dry, Oma Teshi
