Small elephant head on a finger
Realism · Hand · Black and grey · Photo
A small tattoo of an elephant head in profile sits on the side of a finger, with the trunk curled downward and the ear shown in soft grey shading. The linework is fine and the shading builds smooth tonal gradients that give the skin texture and volume. The palette is entirely black and grey, and the close framing isolates the tattoo against the hand, with a blurred background.

You are halfway through a cup of station tea when the elephant comes up the platform, nose first, as if it has a ticket tucked in its trunk. Nobody else on the 6.14 to Carlisle looks up. The porter sees it too, but he has worked nights long enough to know that what the railway loses, it tends to hand back eventually, usually to the wrong platform.

It stops beside your bench and lowers its head, a slow grey weight of creases and patience. One ear is folded like an old letter. Caught in the curl of its trunk is a brass key on a paper tag, the sort the lost property office hangs on a hook by the ticket barrier. The tag says, in your mother's careful capitals, COLLECT FROM BENCH FOUR.
You have not seen that handwriting in eleven years. You have not sat on bench four since the winter the signal failed and the train you were meant to catch never came. You take the key. The elephant exhales, a long dusty sigh that smells of coal smoke and cut grass, then turns and walks back past the newsstand and the shuttered buffet until its grey blurs into the afternoon.
Behind the barrier a bell rings. Beneath the capitals, someone has added a second line in pencil: the sleeper berth is still yours. You stand, you walk toward the left luggage office, and you find you are already counting the steps.
