Traditional anchor, heart and pin-up banner tattoo

Traditional · Colour · Photo

A colour tattoo of an anchor with a ribbon banner across its shank reading STEWED AND SCREWED TATTOOED. Above the banner sit a red cracked heart, a green bottle with a skull label, a cocktail glass, a pin-up woman with a dark bob, and small stars. Bold black outlines and solid fills in red, green, yellow and skin tones give it a flat, classic look.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

By the third round at the Jolly Gannet, Ted Pascoe had wagered a month's pay that the needle man in Gosport could not fit a whole sentence onto a ribbon. Ruby, the landlord's daughter, laughed so hard she spilt her gin across the chart table. The needle man, Mr Albers, who had once inked a Russian admiral's spaniel, only raised a grey eyebrow and asked what the sentence was meant to say.

Ted gave it to him straight, the way a man confesses when he is halfway to the floor. Stewed. Screwed. Tattooed. Albers sucked his teeth, drew the anchor first because a sailor's rule is that the anchor holds everything else, and then he laid the banner across its shank in red and black. The pin-up went on last, her lipstick the exact shade of the cracked heart above her, which Ted swore he had never asked for.

Next morning the crew counted the cost. The cocktail glass had gone on with the rest, along with a green bottle that wore a skull for a label, a joke Albers said was on Ted and not on him. Ted paid his debt, though he never collected the wager, since Ruby had bet against him on the same sentence and won. He still reads the ribbon aloud to new hands at the rail, with the same grin each time, as though it were the sentence he had meant to say all along.
