Grey kitten in a pink lace heart on a thigh
Traditional · Thigh · Mixed · Photo
A grey kitten with large blue eyes, pink cheeks and a small pink nose fills the centre of a pink lacy heart outline. Bold black outlines define the kitten and heart, with soft grey shading across the head and fine hatching on the ears and fur. A yellow bow with a heart-shaped knot hangs below the heart, and the tattoo sits against plain skin with a neutral background.

Mrs Doreen Pike had swept the chip shop floor for thirty-one years without once finding a valentine, so when a pink envelope turned up tucked under the wiper of her Anglia, she assumed it belonged to the baker's girl next door. It didn't. Inside, on a card edged in paper lace, a grey kitten gazed out with eyes the blue of a winter harbour, and underneath, in careful pencil, someone had written: Your bow keeps coming undone. Slipway, Sunday, half seven.

She went in her good coat, if only to be rude to whoever it was. The only man on the slipway was Stanley Vosper, who skippered the Good Intent and smelled of diesel and peppermints. He was splicing rope on an upturned crate and looked as startled as she did. 'Not me,' he said, holding up grease-black hands. 'I'd have drawn a boat. Or a hake.'
They stood there while the grey water knocked against the wall. Then a movement under the tarpaulin by the winch caught her eye, and a kitten strolled out with a yellow ribbon knotted loosely round its neck, the bow slipping sideways over one ear. It was the same kitten, fierce-eyed and smudged with harbour mud. Stanley crouched to reach for it, the kitten bit his thumb, and the ribbon slid off into a puddle.
Doreen fished it out with two fingers and tied it again, properly, with a small heart-shaped knot at the centre. 'Somebody should have told you I can't tie a bow to save my life,' she said. Stanley looked at the ribbon, then at her, and handed her the net needle. The kitten, having won, curled up in the lee of the winch and went to sleep.
