Star Wars characters traditional flash set
Traditional · Mixed · Flash
Six square flash prints are arranged on a pale wall, each showing a Star Wars character or vehicle in a bold outlined traditional style. Chewbacca, Darth Vader, an AT-AT walker, C-3PO, R2-D2 and Yoda are drawn with heavy black outlines and shaded tones on warm, vignetted backgrounds. Red and yellow accents, roses and banners add colour to several designs, while others stay in greys.

The robot came through the Fenwick crossing at ten past four, wrapped in a bath towel on the passenger seat of a grey Transit. I had my torch on it before the driver had wound his window down. Gold paint, chipped at the elbows, two round eyes that had once been bright and were now the colour of weak tea. Tin, I thought, or something cheaper dressed up as tin.

Declare it, I said. He said it was nothing, a present for a woman in Dover who used to hum him to sleep when he was small, and that the humming was not my business. I asked him to lift the towel anyway. Underneath, the gold figure held its arms a little out from its sides, as if it had been waiting all night to be asked to dance. Across its chest ran a banner with STAY GOLD painted on it, and someone had patched one corner with a strip of parcel tape.
I went through the paperwork twice. There was nothing to tax, nothing to seize, nothing I could write down without sounding foolish. The roses on either side of the figure had been done in a red so bright it looked wet under my torch. I told him to go on. He thanked me as if I had done him a great favour, and I suppose I had.
I waved him through at six, when the sun came up pale over the marsh behind the barrier. In the mirror the figure on the seat caught the first light and blazed as though it had been polished for the occasion, and I found I was smiling at a robot before breakfast, which I had not planned to do.
