Traditional flower and crescent emblem on a calf
Traditional · Calf · Colour · Photo
A red upward-pointing emblem sits above a crescent shape and a large red flower with teal centre details, framed by green leaves and orange dots. Bold black outlines and smooth colour shading give it a classic traditional look. The design is centred on the lower leg, with a sneaker and grey wall visible in the background.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction
Dear Nell, the moon came up over the top field last night so fat and low that the poppies along the hedge looked black against it, and I thought of you, because you always said the red ones were the only honest flowers in Hollin Wood. I have not been down past the stile since the frost. Your uncle's knees will not take the bank, so Mr Fairley cuts the back path for me now and leaves the bundles on the gatepost like a milkman.

The gatepost is where the mark is. You will remember it, the upward red cross the Pryce boys cut into the wood the summer they built the raft. They swore it was a sign for the fishing. I told them it was only a pitchfork, and they went off with their chins up. Yesterday I found a fresh one carved beneath it, and a ring of tiny dots pressed in with a nail, like the ones on the tea tin. Someone has been coming up through the bracken in the dark, leaving word for someone else, and I have not decided whether to be cross about it.
So I have put the kettle on the hob and written this rather than sleeping. Come at Easter if the trains are running. Bring the good scissors. I want the rose bush by the well cut back before it swallows the step, and I want you to tell me, plainly, what you make of it all. Your mother would have laughed at the carving and then gone straight out to look at it.
Love, Auntie Vi
