Owl on a branch across the upper back

Traditional · Back · Mixed · Photo

A bold owl sits centred on a branch with leaves on either side, shown across the upper back of a person whose face is not visible. The owl has black outlines and grey shading, with orange beak and talons, and its chest is filled with a geometric pattern of teal, red and grey cubes. Red and green leaves and a red tip below the wings frame the design against the skin.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The lorry was logged at ten past three, a Dutch-plated flatbed carrying eleven pallets of cherry tomatoes and a driver who kept touching his collar. I was on the night desk at Halden Rise, a crossing so small the barrier had its name painted on it in faded letters, and I had been measuring the hours by the hum of the strip light. When I asked him to step down, a small grey owl lifted out from under the tarpaulin and settled on the bonnet of my car as if it had paid for the space.

I should have written it up straight away. Instead I made him open the pallets. Between the tomatoes were crates stacked in a pattern I knew from my grandfather's workshop: isometric cubes in teal, rust and grey, shaded so the eye can't decide which corner is pushed forward. Every crate carried the same stencil, a licence number for a bird import that the ministry has never issued. The owl turned its head all the way round to watch me, orange beak set like a seal on a letter.

The driver finally admitted the bird had come from a farm past the marsh, where the fence is only wire and a man's patience. It had ridden under the tomatoes because nobody searches for live things in the dark. I looked at the owl's chest, the neat grid of cubes, and saw it was counting too: the same count as the pallets, the same number of stacked crates I had signed for twice.

I stamped the manifest DETAINED and then, for reasons I still can't put on a form, I walked it to the gap in the fence. The owl lifted off without a sound and went low across the reeds, toward the side of the marsh that has no barrier arm and no name at all.
