Traditional flower cuff on a wrist
Traditional · Forearm · Mixed · Photo
A solid black cuff band wraps around the forearm close to the wrist, bordered top and bottom by orange lines with a row of black dots. At the centre sits a pink five-petalled flower with a white middle, flanked by orange leaves. The bold outlines and flat colour fills are set against a plain white top and dark background.

The ribbon was still faintly warm from the iron when Mrs Ashdown pressed it into your palm: black silk, edged in orange braid, with a little row of dots stitched along each border like buttons. "Sweet briar," she said, nodding at the pink flower stitched at the centre, its white heart puckered where the thread had been pulled tight. "Tie it on the bloom before the judges come round, or they'll think you've forgotten what the show is for."

The marquee smelled of cut grass and paraffin. Her prize dahlias stood in tin buckets along the trestle, and beside them your marrow lay in its straw, skin the colour of an old penny. You knelt by the trellis and looped the band twice around the stem of the top rose, the orange leaves on the ribbon lying against its real green ones as if they had been introduced at a party and taken to each other at once. The judges passed in their wellingtons and wrote nothing down about you.
At four o'clock the rosettes were handed out and yours was blue, the second kind of blue, which Mrs Ashdown said was the honest colour. She unwound the silk from the stem, shook off the petals of soil, and tied it round your wrist with a bow that would not come undone. "Keep it on till the frost," she said. Walking home past the allotments, you turned your arm over and counted the dots, eleven on one side, eleven on the other, and found a crescent of earth still under your thumbnail that you did not want to wash away.
