The ferry Gannet coughed twice on the slip before Cyril Hosken leaned out of the wheelhouse and said the two words the whole harbour had heard him say before, only louder. It did not make up its mind. Cyril spent an hour with his head in the bilge while Ruth worked on the transom board, mixing the red she used for lifebuoys with a drop of black ink until it darkened towards the bottom like a sky before rain. Her hands wanted something to do, so she painted a heart on a scrap of ply, scalloped its edge in orange, dotted the right side with teal and red drops, and tucked a flower with two dark leaves at its foot. When Cyril came up grey with oil, she turned the board round.
He read it slowly, lips moving. "That's the most honest thing anyone's painted on this island," he said, and he wanted it nailed above the wheelhouse door. Ruth told him it would cost him a pasty. He paid in pasties for a month, and every crossing after, the heart hung there, blistered a little by salt, while the Gannet muttered at the tide and rolled out into the bay.
On the last Friday of October, the engine turned over on the first try, and Cyril stood on the deck with his cap in his hand, looking up at the painted heart as if it had finally done him a favour.
