Travel lettering on a foot

Lettering · Ankle · Black and grey · Photo

A bare foot shows the word TRAVEL in bold black lettering across the top near the ankle, with small leafy vine flourishes rising from the letters. The linework is solid black with no shading, and the ink appears crisp against the skin. The foot fills the frame against a soft, blurred green background, with painted red toenails visible at the lower edge.

The seed packets arrived in Mrs Okonedo's handwriting on the back of a takeaway menu, which was how I knew she meant it. Stop asking for the good scissors, Tom, she'd written. Bring the tin of marigolds and the spade with the cracked handle. The beans need going in before the frost gets clever.

I went up on the Saturday with the spade over my shoulder like I was off to dig for treasure, and found her kneeling by the back wall with a trowel in one hand and a tangle of green in the other. She'd trained a bramble of ivy up the brickwork and then, for reasons she never explained, let it curl out along the path in loops. Halfway along the flagstones it had grown the shape of a word. She said the postman had read it aloud the week before and got it wrong.

We planted the beans in a row beneath the letters, pressing each seed in with one knuckle the way she'd shown me when I was small. The soil was cold and smelled of rain that hadn't fallen yet. When we stood up, our knees cracking in unison, she brushed off her hands and looked at the vine running across the path.

It's not a word for staying, she said. It's a word for going out and coming back with something to plant. I didn't know what to say to that, so I took the spade and started on the far bed, where the earth was still waiting.
