Small heart tattoo on a forearm
Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A small tattoo shows a solid black heart above and to the right of an outlined heart, with a curved line wrapping around the outlined heart. The linework is thin and even, with no shading, and the ink is solid black. The tattoo sits near the wrist on a pale forearm, with a green fabric and a blurred room in the background.

Frank Doyle had carried telegrams up Chapel Row for eleven years, and he knew which doors would open before he reached them. Number nine never did. Mrs Eileen Hatch kept the blind half drawn and waited for him to slide the buff envelope through the letterbox, then stood on the other side until his boots had gone.

On the Thursday before the Whit fair he came with a second envelope pinned inside the first. It held nothing but a card, and on the card someone had drawn a heart in pencil, only its outline, and beside it, a little lower, a solid heart pressed so hard the lead had shone. Frank turned the card over. The back was blank. The Mallow Cross office had stamped it from Glasgow, sender unnamed, and he had a feeling he was not meant to read it.
Eileen opened the door before he knocked. She took the card without a word and looked at it for a long time, then pressed the solid heart with her thumb as if checking it was dry. 'He always drew the outline first,' she said. 'Said that was the bit you could still change your mind about.'
She went to the kitchen and came back with a stub of pencil and asked him to wait while she wrote. When she handed the card back she had drawn a curved line around the outlined heart, looping up and over like the tramlines at the bottom of the hill. 'Take that to the office,' she said. 'Tell them it's a reply.' Frank went down the step with the card held flat in both hands, and for once he did not look back at the blind.
