Small outline heart tattoos on both ankles
Fine line · Ankle · Black and grey · Photo
Two bare feet are shown, one crossed over the other, against a car dashboard. Each ankle carries a small, simple heart drawn in thin black outline with no shading. The skin tone is even and the heart sits near the inner ankle bone, with the photo taken at a casual angle.

Nell had been pricking out sweet pea seedlings since six, and Ruth was still sulking about the greenhouse key. "Take the shed," Nell said without looking up. "It has a leak and a wasps' nest the size of a fist, but it's yours."

Their gran's allotment ran down to the canal in Hebden Bridge, forty rows of runner beans and leeks that the council had been trying to reclaim since the spring. When they were nine, the two of them had drawn small hearts in biro on each other's ankles, then sworn on a jar of gooseberry jam to keep the plot between them whatever anyone said. The ink had gone grey years ago, but Nell still knew exactly where hers sat, and she had never once let it fade in her mind.
The letter from the council had come on Tuesday, folded twice inside a seed catalogue. Ruth wanted to sign. A developer had offered enough to clear her debts, and she said the gooseberries would survive anywhere. Nell said nothing for two days. Then on Saturday she found, pushed under the greenhouse door, the old biscuit tin their gran used for seed packets. Inside, in faded capitals on a card, were the words KEEP THE HEARTS SMALL and beneath them, TELL RUTH THE JAM IS IN THE CUPBOARD.
Nell carried the tin down the path to the shed, where Ruth was sitting on an upturned bucket with her hands in her lap. She sat beside her without a word, and they planted the last row of beans together before the light went.
