Script quote with red heartbeat on wrist
Fine line · Forearm · Mixed · Photo
The tattoo reads Dance alone to the beat of your heart in black script lettering across the inner wrist. Beneath the text, a thin red heartbeat line rises and dips, with one peak shaped into an outlined heart. The photo is taken straight on against a dark background, with the lettering and red line clearly visible.

The band had just finished the first waltz when Aunt Maureen pushed back her chair and stood, smoothing the lilac satin over her hips as though she were late for a bus. Nobody moved to join her. My mother started to say something about her hip, thought better of it, and reached for the bread basket instead.

Maureen crossed the parquet in her stockinged feet, leaving her shoes under the top table beside a half-eaten slice of gateau. The DJ hovered with his finger over the laptop, unsure whether to cut the track. She gave him one short nod, the way she nodded at the vicar, and he let the song run. It was slow and a little tinny, something Uncle Ray had loved and never once danced to with her in forty-one years of marriage.
I took a glass of prosecco out to the edge of the floor, though I had no intention of drinking it. She was turning under the paper lanterns with her eyes shut and one palm pressed flat against her chest, counting something under her breath.
"Go on, love," she said without opening them. "Dance alone to the beat of your heart. Everyone else is waiting for permission, and it's a terrible waste of a good floor."
I didn't go on. I stood with my warm drink and watched her, and by the second chorus my mother had kicked off her heels, then the best man, then the bride herself, who spun in her white dress with her arms flung wide and her laughter bouncing off the glass. Maureen kept her own slow circle at the centre of it all and never once looked round to see who had followed.
