A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The chart table in my uncle's back room smelled of linseed and wet wool, and he would not let anyone touch the brass dividers. "Count them properly," he said, tapping the lamp so the dust lifted. "Seven, then the small ones, then whatever you can see with your eyes shut." I was nine that winter and thought he was teasing, because nobody in Porthallow could count stars with their eyes shut.

The boats went out before light that January, four of them, and the harbour wall kept its lamp burning so the men could find the gap between the rocks. My uncle sat up with the chart and a pencil. Every hour he made a small dot where a star had gone behind cloud and come back, and he made me name them aloud so he could tell from my voice whether I was tired. "Orion's belt," I said. "The Plough. The one that looks like spilt salt."

Near dawn the lamp on the wall went out. My uncle stood so fast his stool clattered, and I saw his hands shake as he struck a spare match. I laid my palm flat on the chart and counted the dots aloud, seven, then the small ones, until the window turned grey and a horn sounded from the bay. Three boats came in on the tide. The fourth followed an hour later, slow, with a red patch sewn into its sail.

That spring I drew stars on my fingers in ink from the pharmacy, one large and one small beside it, then a scatter of tiny ones along the knuckle, because my uncle said a navigator should carry the sky where he could reach it. He never checked my work. He took my hand under the lamp and counted the dots aloud, seven, then the small ones, and at the end he said, "Good. Nothing lost."
