Treble clef on the inner wrist
Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A single treble clef is tattooed on the wrist, drawn with a thin, smooth outline and a few varied strokes. The ink appears pale white or light grey against the skin rather than black or coloured. The photograph is taken from a close angle over a tiled floor, with the hand raised at the top of the frame and the tattoo centred on the right.

The piano had been in the byre since the thaw the previous spring, under a tarpaulin that the Abbott grandsons had weighted with feed sacks, and when the snow came in early November it sat there like a sleeping animal nobody wanted to wake. Walter Hebden had bought it for eleven pounds from a chapel in Hawes that was clearing its pews. He had brought it home on the trailer behind the tractor, with two of the Pratt boys holding the lid shut against the ruts.

Nobody on Scar Top Farm could play. That was the first thing Ruth said when he unwrapped it on the flagstones of the back kitchen, the second being that the mice had been at the felt. Walter did not argue. He sat on the stool with his cap still on, lifted the fallboard, and pressed middle C until the note hung in the cold room and the collie got up off the rug to look for where it had gone.
Through the long dark weeks that followed he learnt the instrument the way he had learnt the weather, by listening for what was wrong. The third octave stuck. A pedal was dead. On the Sunday before Christmas, with the lane sealed under drifts and the lamp swinging from the beam, he found a sheet of music folded inside the lid, its staves gone brown and brittle, full of small hand-drawn clefs that curled like smoke.
He copied one out on the back of a feed invoice, then another, and pinned them above the range. By Candlemas Ruth was humming the tunes under her breath while she salted the bacon, and the dog would not leave the kitchen without the lid propped open. On the first morning the lane was clear enough for the milk lorry, Ruth breathed on the inside of the window and drew a treble clef in the mist, a loop and a long tail. Walter, who had not drawn anything since school, put his finger to the glass and traced it back until the frost ran wet down the pane.
