Treble clef and semicolon on a wrist

Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A small black treble clef with a semicolon-like mark beneath it sits on the inside of a wrist, with the hand raised and turned slightly towards the camera. The linework is clean and solid with no shading, and the ink is a single dark tone against pale skin. The tattoo is centred on the wrist against a dark leather-look surface and a tiled wall.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The rain has found the gap in the tarpaulin again, and it drips onto the box of sheet music you have been sorting since seven. Damp paper curls at the corners. You are halfway through the Ds when the old man in the brown mac stops at your trestle and sets down a bundle tied with garden string. He does not look at the stock. He looks at the water running off the edge of your awning. "Don't throw out the ones with pencil in them," he says. "My wife marked her breaths."

You untie the string. Hymn books, a Clementi exercise book, and a Chopin nocturne so soft from handling that the spine has gone to cloth. In the margins there are small marks, not notes exactly, just a curved stroke with a dot beneath it, placed where a phrase should lean but not land. He taps one with a finger that is shaking a little from the cold. "She said a full stop was rude. Something you did to a person. This one just means keep going, but wait a moment first."

You offer him three pounds for the lot, which is too much, and he refuses, which you expected. He takes a fiver anyway and leaves the nocturne on your trestle, because he says he cannot play it any more and cannot bear to see it in a skip. The rain keeps on. You slide the nocturne into a clear sleeve and write the price on a card in your own handwriting, then cross it out and write nothing at all. You pin it to the front of the box where a passer-by will see the small curved mark before they see the title.
