Treble clef on the wrist
Fine line · Other · Black and grey · Photo
A small, solid black treble clef sits on the inner wrist of an outstretched arm. The linework is clean and even, with little or no shading, and the background is a soft, blurred warm tone. The dark ribbon bracelet with beads crosses the upper part of the frame, and the tattoo is the sharp focal point at the centre.

Dear Marjorie, The gate at the bottom of Mr Penhale's allotment has been squeaking for a month, so I finally oiled it on Saturday. Four rusty flakes came off on the rag, and under the hinge, scratched into the iron as neat as a printer's stamp, was a treble clef. You'd have laughed. I stood there with the oil can like a fool, humming the note the hinge had been making all summer, which turned out to be a G, give or take.

Ida Penhale taught the church choir for forty years, and she kept a hymn book in the potting shed with every page pencilled over. I borrowed it on Sunday. In the margin of 'Abide With Me' someone had drawn a small clef and written beside it 'sing it lower, Teddy', so I think the gate was Teddy's work, a boy who made things with his hands before he made trouble with them.
I walked up to the shed to ask her about it. She was on her knees in the runner beans, pulling up old canes, and she didn't look up. She only said that Teddy had never once been in tune, and that she had loved him for it. Then she handed me a bean pole with its top bent into a neat curl, like a clef, and told me to take it home for my own garden.
I've got it propped by the back door now. The beans are climbing it already, which I suppose is the only tune they know. Yours, Ruth
