Treble clef tattoo on a finger
Fine line · Hand · Black and grey · Photo
A small treble clef is drawn in black ink along the side of a finger, with the hand raised in front of a soft-focus background. The linework is thin and even, with no shading, and the design is shown in solid black ink. The composition is close and centred on the tattoo, with the yellow nails and the blurred, light-coloured clothing giving the frame a neutral backdrop.

The Bramley trees at Hollin Farm had been dropping since the second week of August, and by the first Saturday in September the windfalls had gone soft and sweet in the long grass. Dad said we'd lose the whole lower row to wasps if nobody picked, so I was up the third ladder with a canvas sack when Nell started humming from the next tree over.

She hummed the same four bars all afternoon, a tune that went up like a question and came down as if it had changed its mind. I knew it from the church hall and from the carols my mother made us sing in the car. I didn't know what it was called until Nell pulled a pencil from behind her ear and drew a curl on the back of her hand: a loop with a long tail and a small ring at the bottom, the sort of mark you'd see on a sheet of music pinned up in a dentist's waiting room. That's the one that tells you where everything else lives, she said. Without it the notes are just dots floating about.
We finished the row by six. I remember the light coming sideways through the leaves, the smell of crushed fruit on our boots, and Nell pressing the pencil loop onto my knuckle, promising it would wash off in a week. It didn't. Years later I still hear those four bars whenever I reach for something high up, and I still find myself looking for the place where the tune starts.
