Treble clef tattoo on the hand

Fine line · Hand · Black and grey · Photo

A close photograph of a hand resting on a pale blue handbag, showing a small treble clef tattoo on the back of the hand between the thumb and index finger. The clef is drawn in thin, slightly soft black or grey linework with light shading, and the tattoo is the only ink in the image. The composition is bright and neutral, with the gold rings, a gold bracelet and the bag's branded lettering in the background.

Mabel Coyle could not read a page of music, but the travelling clerk had left his tune book on the church step in Harrow Dale, and she carried it home under her shawl because the little curled sign at the start of each stave looked like a fern uncurling. Her father said it was a clef and that it showed the voice where the high notes lived. She spent a whole winter by the lamp tracing it with one finger until the paper went soft as cloth.

The squire's fiddler had the only instrument in the valley, and he laughed at her efforts over the washing. "Sing it, then," he said at the Michaelmas fair, so she did. She sang the slow air from the book, and the crowd went quiet as her voice climbed and turned back on itself like a stream finding its own bed. The fiddler lowered his bow. Nobody in Harrow Dale had heard a tune come out of a girl that way.

The clerk came back in spring for his book and found it on the mantel, wrapped in a clean tea towel. He asked what she owed him for the lessons. Mabel said she had nothing to pay with. He laughed and said she had taken the only thing worth having, which was the curl itself, and that he had drawn those signs for thirty years without once asking what they meant.

She kept the page. At dusk she sang the high notes to the cows in the lower field, and the cows, the village said, came down to the gate early every evening after that.
